DHCP Reservation For The Airport Extreme
To help ensure your phone adapter works as best it can we need to make sure that it always gets the same IP address. You can do this by creating a DHCP Reservation for the adapter.
If you have a Grandstream HandyTone 502 continue reading. If you have an Innomedia or a Cisco/Linksys adapter skip ahead to the first bullet point.
The first thing you are going to need is the WAN MAC Address of your phone adapter. The sticker on the bottom will have the LAN MAC Address, which is only one value under that of the WAN MAC.
MAC Addresses are in hexidecimal. The standard numeral system is called decimal (base 10) and uses 10 symbols: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Hexadecimal uses the decimal numbers and includes six extra symbols, A,B,C,D,E,F. Since the WAN MAC Address is the same as the LAN MAC Address +1, you can simply add 1 value to the LAN MAC address on the sticker on the bottom of the device.
For example -
If the sticker says 000B82174FD0
the WAN MAC Address is 000B82174FD1
If the sticker says 000B823549BE
the WAN MAC Address is 000B823549BF
In cases where the last digit is F, then you need to increase the last TWO digits by 1.
For example -
If the sticker says 000B8226BD5F
the WAN MAC Address is 000B8226BD60
If you are unable to identify the WAN MAC Address using these instructions, please contact support and we will tell you the WAN MAC Address of your device so you can continue this walkthrough.
• You will also need the current IP Address of your adapter.
- You will need the current IP address of your phone adapter.
- If you have a Grandstream phone adapter please refer to How to receive the current WAN IP Address on a Grandstream.
- If you have an Innomedia phone adapter please refer to How to receive the current WAN IP Address on an Innomedia.
- If you have an Obihai phone adapter please refer to How to receive the current WAN IP Address on an Obihai.
- Please write this IP Address down as you will need it in later steps
If you have already set up port forwarding rules for your adapter, make note of the IP address you used in those port forwarding rules instead
• Open your Utilities folder. From finder click the GO menu and then click Utilities.
• Once in your Utilities folder, double click on AirPort Utility.
• Select your Apple AirPort from the listed devices. If you have set a password for your AirPort there will be a button Enter Password. Click that button and enter the password for your AirPort press enter.
• Once you have entered that password your AirPort will now display some details about itself such as the network name, the IP address and the connected wireless clients. Under where it lists wireless clients, click Edit.
• Once you click Edit you will be presented with the configuration screen for your AirPort. It will open to the Base Station tab.
• Click the Network tab toward the top of the window to enter the network settings screen.
• In the network section there is a section for creating DHCP reservations. Click the + button directly below the section for DHCP Reservations
• You will be presented with an information entry screen.
Please enter PhonePower in the entry field marked Description
Set Reserve Address By: to MAC Address
Please enter the WAN MAC Address you noted from the bottom of your adapter into the entry box for MAC Address
In the entry box labeled IPv4 Address please enter the IP address you noted earlier for your adapter.
• Please click the Save button when you are done.
• Now that you are back to the Network screen please click Update
