Edgemarc-Provisioning SPA942 and SPA504G IP Phones

Preparing The Network

First you will need to connect the Edgewater DIRECTLY to the Internet modem at the location. This modem MUST be just a bridge modem, or if it is a modem/router combo (as is the case with most FiOS or U-verse and some cable connections) then this modem/router combo MUST be configured as a full bridge.

It is critically important that the Edgemarc receives the PUBLIC FACING IP ADDRESS in order to properly do its job. Pseudo-bridge configurations, such as IP passthrough, where the modem/router remains in a router mode while sharing the public IP address with a LAN device are not acceptable. There will be no support provided for network/call quality problems that arise if the Edgemarc is not receiving the PUBLIC IP ADDRESS from a bridge modem (or modem/router combo in full bridge mode).

Edgemarc E4500 / E4500T

Name Description
A Power Connector Accepts the plug from the supplied power cord to connect the unit to an AC power source
B 10/100 Mbps LAN Ports Local Area Network (LAN) ports to connect the IP phones or an Ethernet switch. Unit can also be configure through any of these ports using the web interface
C USB Ports 2 x USB ports (Not Used)
D Ethernet WAN Port Can be used as an alternative to the T1/E1 WAN ports. This port is typically used when connecting the E4500 to an existing T1/E1 WAN router, cable or xDSL modem.

Likely the network resembles the following, though it may not be an exact match.

• Power off the Internet Modem, then disconnect the Ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Internet Modem.

• Connect the Ethernet WAN Port of the Edgemarc directly to the Internet Modem LAN Port.

Connecting The SPA942 / SPA504G IP Phones

• Connect the WAN port of the switch to one of the available LAN ports on the Edgemarc, or, if using 3 or less IP Phones, connect the switch/WAN port of the IP Phones directly to the Edgemarc LAN ports (be sure to leave one LAN port open on the Edgemarc to reconnent the local network. If the IP Phones are to reside next to a PC that will connect to the internet, you can connect that PC directly to the PC port on the IP Phone if desired.

Reconnecting The Local Network

• Once you have completed the steps above, connect the Ethernet cable that was connecting the Internet Modem to the local network to one of the available LAN ports on the Edgemarc. Once this is done, the network setup should resemble the image below

• Power on the Internet Modem, and wait for it to boot up (30-60 seconds should be plenty of time).

• Power on the Edgemarc, and wait for it to boot up (30-60 seconds should also be plenty of time).

• Use one of the computers on the local network to verify connectivity to the Internet.

If needed, you can use the articles below to configure the E4500 for the connection types listed depending on the Internet connection being used.

Static IP

DHCP IP

PPPoE IP

Additionally, you will want to determine the actual upload and download speed being received from the ISP (not the speed promised, but the actual throughput on the line) and use the article HERE to adjust the Traffic Shaper accordingly.
